FIGHTING ILLITERACY AND SCHOOL DROP-OUT RATES AT THE TIBETAN BORDER
In the northern part of Nepal, poor people are facing a battle against the highest illiteracy rates in the country. Only 34% of the population knows how to read and write.
In this hilly area, schools are scarce, the teachers come from outwith the area and aren’t adapted to the realities of local life, and there is a huge need for awareness-raising to convince parents to send their children at school.
Sathi Om decided to help villagers address these issues by implementing a project beginning in September 2007 in Gatlang, a small village located in Rasuwa District, which includes:
- School enrolment,
- Informal education and life skills training
- Awareness-raising workshops on the benefits of education
- Providing school material for teacher and children
- Advocacy to the local authorities
- Creation of a “youth platform” to make their voice heard
