ACTIONS IN NEPAL
2001, before Sathi Om
A trIP TO ASIA….that became much more than JUST TOURISM
A dream trip to Asia was the start of Sathi Om’s adventure. The 4 of us - school students and childhood friends - decided to visit Nepal in 2001. We wished to experience something more than just a mere “tourist trip”, so we decided to manage a humble charity project, based on 3 actions:
- helping a Tibetan school for exiled Buddhist nuns, by providing them with school materials
- financing the creation of a kindergarten
- organizing an art and culture workshop based around exchanges of drawings
Directly after this first endeavor, we decided to create our NGO and to keep on helping the Nepalese community so that the Nepalese children can get opportunity to learn the basics.
- Helping the TibetanSchool of Arya Tara
Sathi Om provided the school furniture necessary to help Nun Ani Choying Drolma run her primary and secondary school in Samakushi. This school enables 37 Tibetan refugees to preserve their traditional Buddhist knowledge.
- Financing the setting up of a kindergarten
Sathi Om helped to finance the building of, and the setting up and purchasing of furniture of a community kindergarten, in Golfutar, in the suburbs of Kathmandu. This kind of structure enables the isolated mothers of young children to go back to work and generate incomes.
- Organising a workshop and drawing exchanges in primary school
Sathi Om offers selected schools in Kathmandu the chance to engage in activities which are designed to help children discover a different culture and new games. Most importantly, Sathi Om teaches children how to express themselves, using various artistic techniques; - an unforgettable experience for them.
Similar activities have also been implemented in Bhaktapur, with the disadvantaged children sponsored by our partner TOIT.
After this first step, Sathi Om was officially created and took a commitment to be involved in positive development projects, led by local actors, and aimed at increasing the access of opportunity to development to disadvantaged children. |
